TOAD ON THE ROAD: 24 HOURS IN TEXAS WITH WARTOAD

Punkadelic pioneers, Wartoad, recently hit the road to promote new album ‘I Get High’. Having returned home, the band have delivered their visual record of 24 hours during the ‘Don’t Step On Me’ tour of Texas…

It’s 3 am on a Tuesday in May on Route I-20 W between Marfa and Denton (AKA the middle of F***ing Nowhere, Texas). The party is just getting started on the ‘TOAD bus …when one of the wheels falls off. Literally.

The bus, sans wheel.

So, WARTOAD disembarks and smokes some “vegan herbal cigarettes” while discussing the best possible way to get 300 miles to our next show, at Andy’s Bar in Denton. (Left to right: engineer Stan Mosley, failing to get a signal; drummer, singer, bass player Kip Larson’s knees and ambiguous pink shorts; back of lead guitarist Calvin Voltz’s head; keyboard player Al Dijon). There are two (2) options are on the picnic table: 1. Drive bus without back wheel (massive punk points) 2. Get a new bus

Arguments for and against are heard (“not sure we need that particular wheel” “they probably put it there for a reason” “maybe if we all sit at the front?” etc. etc.) and a totally non-democratic vote is taken by the only two band members still awake: rhythm guitarist Butch Dante (l) and all round musicalist Kip Larson, with “those shorts” again (r), and the ‘toad opts for the WEAK emo-style second option. Boo! It takes most of the day for the new bus to arrive which gives the band plenty of time to …

… meet the local retailers, who were CLEARLY delighted to see us… Left: drummer Tony Downing (l) and Stan Mosley (r) making a great impression in JP McPickleshitters’ General Store…

… grabbed a tattoo, or two (tat-two?) … on the left, singer, bass n’ six string player Danielson’s hammer; on the right, rhythm guitarist Butch Dante’s new stabby thing. 5 pm rolls around and the new bus arrives (finally… wait all day for a bus, and then one turns up!) BIG NEWS…

…. replacement bus (r) is BLACK! (Massive style upgrade and WINNING!). Say goodbye to shit old RED bus with Elvis license plate (ok, ‘toad was digging the license plate).

Arrive at Denton late, just time for a quick snack, then load in and sound check… Note the WARTOAD whistle in patent-pending-but-unlikely-to-be-awarded Rock Whistle Flight Case.

Time to add to the venues indigenous vandalism with some WARTOAD stickerage…
